Gertrude Buikema (1874-1942) was among the staunchest of the early Bahá’ís of Chicago. Along with Albert Windust she co-edited “Bahá’í News” from its first issue in 1910. Tthe magazine later became known as “Star of the West”. She and Windust continued as editors until 1922, when others took over.
When ‘Abdu’l-Bahá came to America in 1912 Buikema took the notes for three of His talks in Chicago that were later published in “Promulgation of Universal Peace”.
She served on a number of important committees of the NSA for many years.
